Uploaded video doesn't seem to work
-
I don’t know what version of WordPress I am using. I don’t know how to find out. In Settings? I don’t see it there.
I uploaded a 30-second, 8 MB video file. It shows up in my media library as being 30 seconds long and 8 MB. But when I click on it to play it, it shows as being 0.00 seconds long, and does not play. The link to it is http://fish.jimsinclair.org/wp-admin/upload.php?item=25
What do I need to do to get this video to be playable?

That’s a link to the file in your Dashboard, we can’t access that.
Would you please embed the video into a post or page so we can see the problem?
By the way, you’re running WordPress 4.1, you can see at the bottom of your Dashboard or in your site’s source view. 🙂
Thank you for the reply. The post where I tried to embed the video is at http://fish.jimsinclair.org/is-this-mating-or-bullying/
there’s a distinct possibility that your hosting may have issues with streaming video. get on to them and see if they’re set up for it on your hosting package.
The file won’t even play when accessed directly: http://fish.jimsinclair.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/VID_20150209_144936.mp4
This is probably a problem with the file and definitely not a problem with WordPress.
Which application did you use to export the file?
The file plays find on my computer. That is why I am confused.
I uploaded it to WordPress using the WordPress HTML post editor.
Right, but where did you *export* the video from? What did it come from?
Also, can you open and play the file from your computer in your web browser, not just a dedicated media app?
Try this plugin for self hosted videos. I love it.
James Huff I recorded the video on my Android phone. Then I sent it to myself via gmail. Then I opened gmail on my laptop and saved the file to my laptop. And as I said before, I am able to play it just fine on the laptop.
I do not know how to open a file in a web browser when the file is saved on my computer, not successfully uploaded to a web site. Can you explain please?
questas_admin I will go look at the plugin you suggest.
questas_admin, switching to a new player won’t change the fact that video file itself cannot be played directly.
jisincla, assuming you’re using Chrome (or any modern browser for that matter), just drag the video file from your computer into the browser window.
If it plays, please let us know!
James Huff, I am using Chrome.
I tried dragging the file into the browser window. I got a black screen with…um, is there a way I can attach and embed a screenshot to show you what happened?
Meanwhile the saved file still plays perfectly fine on my computer, and if I email it to other people as an attachment, they are also able to download it and view it.
this is why i suggested it might be a server issue. if you and anyone else can play it fine but it doesn’t play from the server where your wordpress site is hosted then that’s the source of the problem.
So, I just tried myself, I downloaded your video, and it plays perfectly in my dedicated media players. However, it does not play when opened in the browser with Chrome 40.0.2214.111 and Firefox 35.0.1, and Firefox reports the following:
“Video can’t be played because the file is corrupt.”
This is definitely not a problem with WordPress or the server, the file is corrupt.
Try exporting the video again, and if it still fails, try my old standy-by for random video weirdness: http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/
Just run it through that with MP4 selected as the output format. It will strip away any proprietary coding and optimize the file a bit.
I tried exporting the video several times already. So I just now downloaded and installed mirovideoconverter and tried to run the video through it. I got this error message. What does it mean?

Wow, I’ve never seen that before. “Error while opening encoder for output stream #0:1 – maybe incorrect parameters such as bit_rate, rate, width or height” appears to be the key, like your video file is so corrupt, even MVC can’t handle it.
Can you copy the video from your phone again?
