• I have both an wp-content/upload and wp-content/upLoad folder (note the capitalization), and some images are in the root (as I want it) and some are in sub year/date folders. Which folder is right “upload” or “upLoad” and how can I clean it up? Thanks, Alan

  • The default folder WordPress comes with is wp-content/uploads, and then it is arranged by year and date folders.

If you want to use a different folder or not arrange by date/year, you can go to Settings > Media and enter the name of a different folder to use and then uncheck the box that says Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders.

So I’m assuming that at one point someone must have created a different folder and chosen not to use the organization, since you shouldn’t have two upload folders.

Thanks dkotter, that helps. Interesting going to Settings/General under “Store uploads in this folder” it says “Default is wp-content/upLoads”. Could this have just changed with a recent update? Alan

As far as I know it’s always been wp-content/uploads by default. So either someone changed it or a plugin or theme changed it. I know of a few themes that change the upload file location when the theme is activated.
