• This is a recurring problem.
I always test new versions on my dev system before updating production.
There are occasions, notably with major upgrades, that WooCommerce upgrade fails saying it cannot delete the old version.
At this point, the site nolonger works – obviously.
When I look at the WooCommerce directory, it is empty.
So I download and copy over the WooCommerce installation.

What needs to be done to avoid this happening ?
I do not have any WooCommerce files open in another application.
However, I have iThemes Security activated. Could this be the problem ?

I’m not sure if it’s security plugins, but it does sound like file permissions issues. i.e. WordPress cannot create the plugin directory. doing it manually fixes it short term but doesn’t fix the actual problem.

If you de-activate woocommerce and remove the woocommerce directory via FTP (do not use the ‘delete’ button in admin), you can install it again via the UI which may clear up your permissions.
