Howdy,
I just tried to reproduce that by taking the same steps you took and the update went fine. I believe that there is probably a conflict with another plugin and that’s what caused the crash. If you have access to your error logs I’d be happy to take a look.
Our marketing dept just bricked the company website after upgrading the Awesome Surveys plugin. Failure mode is as described above – blank pages (Apache 500 internal error).
From the moment of the upgrade onwards, every page view is failing with the same PHP Fatal error:
PHP Fatal error: Class ‘Awesome_Surveys’ not found in /home/webuser/public_html/wp-content/plugins/awesome-surveys-export-csv/includes/class-csv-export.php on line 3
So it looks like your upgrade does not work with your beta plugin..?
(Marketing have been reminded in strong words that they are not to change plugins on the production server, and *especially* not to do this 5 minutes before home time on a Friday afternoon.)

I appreciate the error message – that pretty much narrows it down. I’ll see what I can do.

For anyone else whose site has crashed when updating, if you also have the companion CSV exporter extension installed, that’s probably why your site crashed. To recover, access your filesystem via ftp or your cpanel dashboard, either rename or delete the awesome-surveys-export-csv directory and that should get you sorted. Afterward, you can reinstall it or rename it back to what it was and reactivate. I have also rolled out an update to the exporter which should resolve this issue.
Sorry for the inconvenience 🙁
Hi had the same issue and posted what I did to resolve it here:

I just updated to 1.6.1. The plugin was deactivated and I lost the survey and all data. Giving up with this plugin, it is not ready.
Oh that’s not good at all. I didn’t update because I had a survey going so I’m still on 1.5.2 but good to know that I shouldn’t upgrade when the survey is done.
Can you revert back to the last backup of your site to get the data back? I sure hope so.
Yes I got the data back but won’t bother putting the survey back on – searching for another plugin that does a similar job!
I had to reinstall the plugin to get everything back and my survey re appeared!
