Hello @canu
Thanks for using Yoast SEO.
If you want a specific image to show in the preview when your post is shared on social media platofrms, the image needs to be uploaded as the social image for the post in the social tab of the Yoast SEO meta box. This is the Open Graph image or og:image. The site image won’t be used in that sense as this image is used as a fallback for posts/pages that don’t have any images set.
If you want to use the site image as the og:image, there is an image hierarchy. This means the following images must not be present:
- A user-defined image “Facebook image” in the Social tab of the Yoast metabox.
- A user-defined “Featured image” for the page (only for posts).
- A prominent image from the page’s content — when that image is resized in the content, we show its full-sized counterpart (this isn’t true when indexables are disabled).
- The “Social default image” from the template in Search Appearance.
- The site’s fallback/default social image (set at SEO > Social > Facebook > Default image).

Hello @maybellyne,
Thanks for your response, it was very helpful.
I’m using Yoast version 28 & can’t find SEO > Social > Facebook > Default image I’m afraid.
From what I’ve read, the path to change the “Social Default Image” is Settings > Site basics > Site image, is that correct?
I’ve added a Site image there but when I view the Home page source code, it is has not been updated.

Hey @canu,
Yes, you are correct. The Site-wide default social image should be under Site basics > Site image. We might have used an example from an older plugin setting version.
If the og:image is not updating, I would recommend checking the Content-type default social image, which is under Yoast SEO > Settings > Content-types > Posts/Pages > Social image.
Please check everything, all the way to the top of the hierarchy:
- Facebook image set in the Yoast Social tab (individual page/post) ← highest priority
- WordPress Featured Image
- First/prominent image found in the content
- Content-type default social image
- Site-wide default social image

Hi @adminalje,
Thanks for your post.
I took a look at the Social image setting and it’s currently blank as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/y8ecRBw
I’ll ask our client about upgrading and will revert soonest.

Hi @adminalje,
Thanks for your patience. I have upgraded the plugin to the Yoast Premium, updated the Social image & flushed the website’s cache.
I opened the website in a private browser & reviewed the source code and found that it had not changed i.e., it still showed the default theme image rather than the website’s default image.
As I’ve upgraded to Premium, would it be better to continue this using premium support?
Any ideas as always are much appreciated.
Best regards,
@canu
