*make a backup copy of your files AND database before doing any updates
*if you are using an old theme or plugins — they may not work perfectly with php update to 7.1 – prepare for that to happen (I speak from personal experience)
*if your webhosting vendor offers a staging site — please test your updates in a staging site before updating live website

thanks for the tip
but the big question is update wordpress or php first?

I have not recently updated from a version like 3.1 to 5.0+
I would use a staging site (or local development environment) to test before updating in live site
-Update PHP version
-Prepare for older plugins + theme to have issues
-Update WordPress version
