    Hello,

I read through various posts on your plugin and I think it can solve a lot of things for me. One issue I am not particular sure if I can do it with your plugin as it came up multiple times.
I do have around 1.000 pictures for products. All these pictures I have renamed with a script and also do have data ready as a spreadsheet (or CSV) with the values for each filename as an unique identifier.
I am using the “flat” folder structure when I would upload the pictures and what I would like to do is reference for this unique file name and populate caption alt_text, etc.. metadata through my csv file.

Or – as I am still in the making of the whole product pages that also will be imported – is there a more clever / elegant way to fill the metadata already whilst uploading the images?

Please note: The images themselves currently do not carry and relevant meta_data, this is only in my spreadsheet.

    Thanks

    Ele

Thanks for your interest in the plugin and for your question. Importing data from a CSV file and matching it with Media Library items has come up before, most recently in these topics:

    Export Settings?

    Export/Import Att. Data

    As I wrote then:

The current MLA version does not have any features along these lines, and I regret that I do not have the time required to develop them. It would be an interesting addition to the plugin, but a significant amount of work to do in any general way.

At this time I have no plans to work on features of this type. I regret the news is not better, but I am marking this topic resolved simply because your question has been answered. I hope you are able to find a solution that meets you needs. Thanks again for your interest in MLA.

I’ve been thinking again about your question and I realized that implementing CSV access as an example plugin that creates a custom MLA “data source” would reduce the work required significantly. This new approach takes advantage of MLA’s existing features to a large extent and was a manageable development effort.

I have uploaded a new MLA Development Version dated 20200528 that includes a new “MLA CSV Data Source Example” plugin. You can find step-by-step instructions for using the Development Version in this earlier topic:

PHP Warning on media upload with Polylang

Once the Development Version is installed you must install and activate the example plugin. Navigate to the Settings/Media library Assistant Documentation tab and click the “Example Plugins” button. Type “CSV” in the text box and click “Search Plugins” to filter the table.

You are looking for the “MLA CSV Data Source Example” plugin. Find that plugin and hover over the title in the left-most column. Click the “Install” rollover action, then go to the WordPress Plugins/Installed Plugins submenu and activate the example plugin as you would any other plugin. Make sure you have the latest version, 1.00, installed.

Once the Development Version and updated example plugin are installed and active you can navigate to the Settings/MLA CSV Data admin screen and configure the plugin for your application. You will find a Documentation tab with quite a bit of instructions and information. I would be very interested in any suggestions you have about the documentation content.

It would be great if you could install the Development Version and the example plugin and let me know if it works for you. Thanks for inspiring this long-wanted MLA improvement.
