Support » Plugin: Spam Free WordPress » Update broke my sites

After updating the spam free wordpress plugin on my multisite this morning I get a message at the top of every site demanding I upgrade to a paid service. It also broke all my logins. I cannot log into the control panel of any site or my main site. What can I do to remove the plugin and get rid of the spam it’s producing on all my sites?

  • I was able to delete the plugin from my Multisite but one of my single sites is still broken. I can’t login to the dashboard to delete the Spam Free WordPress plugin. When I try I get the following message.

Wild guess (no guarantee that it works): When you load BLOG-URL/wp-admin/ (where BLOG-URL is — well — the URL of your blog), are you able to log in?

Regarding the latest updates of this plugin: I’ll send a mail to the plugin people and suggest to remove it.

No- Going to produces the error described in my last post.

    Sorry, I missed that post.

In this case, I see two possible ways to fix it:

If you have ftp or ssh access (or can remove files by other means other then using the wordpress backend), just remove the plugin.

Else, if you have some way to change or override php.ini values, try enabling PHP output buffering (output_buffering = On in php.ini). This may workaround the error you see.

Otherwise, I’m sorry i’m running out of ideas.

I have identified the problem with the update that caused this, and emailed the info to the plugin author. I believe the breakage was unintentional. In the meantime, the plugin has been de-listed to prevent any further breakages. When the author fixes the plugin and contacts us, we will re-list it.

Thanks Mkillian and Samuel. I was able to remove the plugin through my cpanel file manager and the site seems to be functioning properly now. Hopefully a working version of the plugin will be available soon.

I made an unfortunate mistake with a hook in SFW. I have fixed it in the new version. My apologies.

    Kind regards,
