Update breaks my images

I have continuously tried updating my WordPress since 7.0.3. Whenever I update the images on my page break. I have reached out to my web host who has basically told me don’t update but I’m uncomfortable using outdated versions. What can I do to fix this problem?

What exactly are you updating? Just WordPress, or does it crash after updating plugins?

And what exactly do you see when the problem occurs? For example, which images are missing, and what do you see in their place?

Are there any messages under Tools > Site Health?

I am using the WordPress updater through my cPanel in WordPress Management using smart update to go from 7.0.3 to 7.1. I have used this repeatedly on plugins with no problems whatsoever however when updating WordPress itself, The test page shows that the image of my face in the upper left hand side of the website and the main graphic logo in the middle of the page are broken and missing. By broken I mean it shows the little broken image icon instead of the image. Also videos on my pages also show the broken icon instead of image.

In order to keep the site running properly I don’t do the update after the test page shows the broken icons. Also I’ve tried it on three different web browsers with the same result. Two on my computer and one on my cell phone. Also tried with and without VPN. In all cases I get the same result. Would it be helpful if I sent you the link to the test page?

If you manage this through cPanel, you can never really tell exactly what’s happening. What happens if you install the updates through WordPress itself?

And what about this?

Are there any messages under Tools > Site Health?

Also: Are you using an image optimization plugin? If so, which one?

And: Try disabling all plugins, either before and/or after the update.

And: If you’re using a cache plugin, clear its cache or disable it as a test.

Hello! Just checking if your issue is already resolved?

I just checked your website on my end, and it seems fine. I can see all the photos and play the videos. If you’re still seeing the broken thumbnails on your test page, try checking your Media Library – ensure no media is missing. Also, maybe the image optimization plugin(s) may not be compatible with the 7.1 WP version. I’d try disabling those first. Did you try clearing cache from a caching plugin (if you’re using any) or from your server-level cache?

Hi Threadi, your suggestion to update directly through the WordPress site rather than through my cPanel was scary and I was hesitant to do so since it did not offer the same safe backup feature as the cPanel. But I backed up everything thoroughly and bit the bullet. Using the WordPress dashboard I updated the website and it updated without any issues whatsoever.

Now everything is running fine and I have a new level of confidence when it comes to using the WordPress dashboard. Thank you!!!
