I’ve got a startup business that will rely heavily on selling digital downloadable products to customers. However, I need to be able to periodically update the files and retain previous customer access. Essentially, they need to be able to get free updates for life. Is there an effective way to do this with WooCommerce?

    Hi there 👋

Absolutely! One of the best ways to do this with WooCommerce is by once you have created your Digital Downloadable product, and once you have added the links for the downloads, the only thing you have to do to update the file is to replace the downloadable link with the new one you would like to use, under the Downloadable files field of the product.

Please kindly note that updating the links this way will maintain customer access for it. But, if you delete (by clicking the X button) or add files to the product, then you will need to regenerate access for the customers.

However, you can always regenerate access for each user, or you could also bulk regenerate accesses for all the customers by using an external plugin like this one:

I hope that helps to clarify. 🙂

    Cheers!

    Gabriel,

    Thanks for your help.

I’m currently using the Dropbox plugin with WooCommerce because the files I’m uploading are greater than my 32MB limit. The method you describe does not work with the dropbox feature. Even though the link is pasted in the same spot, and the .zip file will actually download, once I try to open it, I get this error: “Unable to expand [file name]. It is an unsupported format.”

Any thoughts on how I can either expand my upload file size or get Dropbox to work correctly?

Oh, I see! It sounds like this issue is directly related to the WooCommerce Dropbox plugin.

So in this case, I would like to recommend you to contact the WooCommerce Dropbox support team so that they can help you with this issue. Here is the link to their support forum:

    https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/woocommerce-dropbox/

Please kindly note that this particular forum is for questions that are directly related to the features and functionality of the free WooCommerce plugin. While we’re experts on our own products, third party plugins are best supported by their own resp. developers (and more importantly, I’d rather not give you any incorrect information).

    I hope this helps. 🙂
