    I am using WordFence V7.4.2 (1575390485)
I have the following message in WordPress:

The last rules update for the Wordfence Web Application Firewall was unsuccessful. The last successful update check was November 23, 2019 1:00 pm, so this site may be missing new rules added since then. You may wait for the next automatic attempt at January 11, 2020 2:11 pm or try to Manually Update by clicking the “Manually Refresh Rules” button below the Rules list.

When I try a manual update I get the response:

    Rule Update Failed
No rules were updated. Please verify you have permissions to write to the /wp-content/wflogs directory.

I tried several suggestions in posts in this forum before Christmas to try and resolve it but was seemingly unsuccessful.
I have checked the file permissions of my rules.php file in the wflogs folder, its permissions belong to the user/group specified in WordFence > Tools > Diagnostics > PHP Environment > Process Owner
All other items in the Diagnostics tab have a green tick.
PHP version is 7.3.13 with a green tick.
The timestamp on rules.php is 23 Dec 2019 12:11:33 PM

I have sent a diagnostic report from WordFence with my forum username and the link to this thread.

  • Hi @karlinoz,

We got your diagnostics, and there doesn’t seem to be an issue with file permissions. Can you try deleting the entire /wflogs folder to see if it regenerates?

    Hi @wfdave,
Thanks for your quick response. I did do that before Christmas and I think that is why the date on the current rules.php is 23 Dec but I’ll do it again now to verify.

    Cheers,

    Hi again @wfdave,
So, I deleted the folder and it recreated again successfully and with a new version of rules.php
The firewall is now in learning mode again. I did a manual rule refresh and this time it works, the datestamp on the rules.php updated to the current time and I got a success message from WordFence. So it would appear at the moment it is working ok. Should I switch the firewall away from learning mode or just leave it to just automatically switch back on 16 Jan as it is set to at the moment?

    Cheers,
    Karl

    Hi @karlinoz,

My apologies, it looks like your update was missed.

I’m assuming the Firewall is enabled and this point and since we haven’t heard back it means the rules are correctly updating now, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved.

Please feel free to open another thread if you’re still having issues with Wordfence.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
