On my sites running earlier versions of WP, I have a “Users” tab in the Left Hand Menu. On version 3.8.3 this option is no longer available. How do I add / change “Users” on this version and later versions of WP please?

    My site is http://www.sportsmemories.co

    Thanks, Denis

  • The Users link in the sidebar should still be there – just under the Plugins link.

When you are logged in to the blog admin can you get to /wp-admin/user-new.php ?

    Thanks for the quick response.

The link to “Plugins” is also not showing.

When I try the link you gave me http://www.sportsmemories.co/wp-admin/user-new.php I get the blank page with the message
“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

    Very confusing.

    Have you tried:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

I do not have the following tabs showing in the Left Hand Menu: “Contact”, “Appearance”, “Plugins”, “Users”, “Settings”, on my site http://www.sportsmemories.co These tabs are available on my other sites (which are using earlier version of WP). Am I to assume, therefor, that the sports site has been hacked? Can access to and the display of these tabs, be removed by hackers? Any ideas how I can get these tabs back? Do I now have to reload backup? Will this help?

A scan of your site does not show any signs of a hack. Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

This sounds like you’ve somehow lost admin rights. Have you installed a membership plugin of any sort?

Actually, looking at your site, have you logged in as a regular user and not the admin user?

I have not installed a membership plugin.I currently do not have a plugin link to confirm that this has not been installed by others (eg freelance web developer)
I can still login as “admin” and make changes to, eg. pages, products, etc.
How do I get these links back? I am not technically qualified; Do I need to employ someone to do this?

I can still login as “admin”

That does not mean you are the admin though.

Who runs the site? I would ask them if they have changed your role as changing you back is the simplest fix.

I am running the site; at least, I thought I was until this issue arose. I can still login as “admin” and make changes to, eg. pages, products, etc. I am able to change the password and have done this, so I am the only one currently with access to the dashboard, but I do not have the menu links mentioned above. Any ideas on how to get these links active again?

If you cannot see the Plugins link in the left sidebar then your site is not recognising you as being a Site Admin. The login name is not related to the actual role you have.

Do you have access to the database using phpmyadmin? Can you look in the wp_users table and see if there are others listed there?

On the offhand chance it’s cookie error – do you see the same if you login with a new browser?

I do not understand “..database using phpmyadmin..” I am not technically qualified to use this.

Are you able to help me sort this issue via a freelancer site and I will pay you for your work?

Alternatively, do you have any other suggestions? I am now concerned that others may be controlling my website.

    The issue is now sorted.

Thanks to all out there for your advice and assistance.
