Two page slug setups

If I wanted old posts retain date-based slugs:

xyz.com/year/month/post-slug

but have new posts use a new format:

xyz.com/post-slug

…is this possible? If not, what’s the next-best solution? Utilizing redirects on old posts and adhering to the new (desired) slug hierarchy?
