Tumblog type homepage… impossible?

I’m trying to do something with WordPress that might be a bit impossible but I thought I’d check here first to see if anyone has heard of anything like this.

Background:

I’ve had a wordpress blog for about 5 years now so I obviously have quite a bit of information archived that I’d like to leave alone and still be accessible with the current permalink structure etc… This is really the main reason I’m trying to get wordpress to achieve my goals rather than ditching it for another solution.

I also have had a sidebar on my blog for quite some time that basically includes quite a bit of RSS info from other sites that I use frequently. Flickr pictures, Del.icio.us links, Twitter posts, Last.fm updates, etc…

My main goal is to integrate all this information into a 1 column layout, similar to a Tumblog type setup.

Goal:

Essentially what I’d like is some way to build my template that it would not only include the latest WordPress post excerpts, but as well, any content from any one of the RSS feeds from the services I use, i.e., Twitter, Flickr, Del.icio.us, etc… And I’d like whatever is the latest to appear first, so not grouped together but rather separated by date.

I have no clue of how to go about achieving this or if it’s even possible. My mind tells me that because the wordpress posts are pulled from a loop that I’d have to hack the loop. Another solution I thought of would be maybe some kind of plugin that would import external RSS entries into a WordPress post with a category attached to the post depending on what feed it came from. Then I could just style the different categories on the home page differently which is fairly trivial.

So, sorry for the long post.. but has anyone heard of anything like this? Is it possible? If so, how?
