Trouble with uploading images

Hi everyone, I’m fairly new to wordpress so you’ll forgive my apparent ignorance.

i have nextgen gallery running on a site, and until recently it was fine. it has how in the last few hours suddenly stopped uploading images. The problem i am facing is that it returns no error message, and simply says “0 images uploaded”. The folders in question have the appropriate permissions and the images are of an appropriate size.

Additionally i cannot create any new galleries. Again, no error message is returned.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I have been bashing my head against a brick wall on this for a while now and needs a some what urgent repair.
