Could you please share a little more of details about it? Is the free shipping class attached to a specific product or is it offered to a specific country/address?
Also, why the amount is wrong? Could you please describe what’s the expected behaviour and what’s happening instead? If you can share a screenshot of your settings, that would be helpful too.

Whenever I switch between free shipping and flat rate, the total doesn’t change.

Oh, right! Probably there’s something missing in your shipping settings there.
If you want to offer Free Shipping to specific products, there’s a great tutorial that explains how to achieve it here:
