Toolbar on Dashboard is gone
-
Hello,
I upgraded to wordpress version 4.1 a couple weeks ago and my backend was working fine. When I went to log in yesterday after being off of it for a few days everything on my toolbar except the dashboard and profile tabs was gone! Please help! The website is still up and running, but I cannot make any changes.

Are there any other administrators on the site, or is it just you?
I just tried to reproduce your issue and failed. Using MAMP 3.0.7.3 as my web host base, I installed a fresh version of WordPress 4.0.1. Then I took snapshots of the dashboard. After which I clicked on the update to 4.1 link and proceeded to update to WordPress 4.1. After which I also updated Akismet (which remains non-active) as well as three default themes (i.e., Twenty Twelve, Thirteen, and Fourteen). Twenty Fourteen being my active theme. All the above was performed on a Mac using Chrome 39.0.2171.99 (64-bit).
Thus, I am wondering what piece of the puzzle is missing in my tactics listed above in order to reproduce what you’re seeing. Reason being, in order to come up with a solution to your issue, we need to be able to reproduce your bug. That being said, might I suggest switching to a default WordPress theme (e.g., Twenty Fifteen, Fourteen, etc.) as well as deactivate ALL your currently active plugins. Then try to reproduce what you’ve been seeing. Or, in your case, what you’re NOT seeing!
If you are able to reproduce your bug with a near default install of WordPress (i.e., sans any 3rd party themes or plugins) then we’ll deal with that. Otherwise, if it turns out to be a typical 3rd party integration issue then we can take the needed steps to isolate the misbehaving theme and/or plugin(s). π
P.S., When you say, “everything on my toolbar except the dashboard and profile tabs was gone!”, can you more fully explain what’s missing please. For example, when I look at my toolbar, I see the WordPress logo (with a dropdown menu for About WordPress, WordPress.org, Documentation, Support Forums, and Feedback), a home icon + WordPress (with a dropdown menu for Visit Site), a comments counter icon + number, a + New (with a dropdown menu for Post, Media, Page, and User) on the left and the typical Howdy Randy + icon on the far right.
Hope this helps!
Randy
When you say, “everything on my toolbar except the dashboard and profile tabs was gone!”
Going out on a limb here, I’m suspecting his account was demoted to the Subscriber roll, which can only see the Dashboard (a very limited Dashboard) and Profile tabs.
Ah yes James, I’m beginning to suspect the same thing. Next time I will ask “what roll are you logging in as?” Moreover, I love your discovery question (i.e., “Are there any other administrators on the site, or is it just you?”). That single question answers a lot! π
Plus, of course, I was fixated on the actual toolbar objects and not the “Show on screen” dashboard items (e.g., At a Glance, Activity, Quick Draft, WordPress News, and Welcome).
I have seen far too many of these happen as the result of one administrator accidentally (or purposefully) demoting another, so I figure it’s best to get that out of the way first. π
There are one or two other administrators, but I am the only one who really runs the website. If being demoted is the case, how can I fix this. Basically I can see “Dashboard” and “Profile” on the toolbar. Everything else like Posts, Pages, Media, Links, Comments, etc… are gone. My Dashboard tab doesn’t drop down to a menu anymore either. Thank you all for the help!
You can modify the database directly, but it would be much better and safer to ask one of the other Administrators to promote you to Administrator again via the Users section of the Dashboard.
I’m talking to a friend right now with the same issue..
After the 4.1 update the tool bar vanished.. disabling all plugins and switching to default theme changed nothing. All updates are current
The site has a single administrator, and she is still listed as the Administrator, so that’s not the issue
Would you please open your own thread about that, as it could be an entirely different problem?
