Toggle Parent Categories

The solution provided to my previous post (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/toggle-collapse-expand-parent-categories/#post-15199174) does not work as needed. In order to expand each category to see subcategories, you have to check the category, but then checking a subcategory has no effect because it doesn’t overwrite the checked parent category selection. Ideally:
The parent categories should have + beside them, not a checkbox;
The (child) subcategories, when checked should have AND logic with other categories and filters.I’ve managed to find a way to make it LOOK the way I’d like it to look but it doesn’t work properly. I can’t scroll down past a certain point with the filters on the left and can’t choose multiple subcategories from different parent categories and successfully display them.
