Title not displaying properly in posts

Hi there,

I am something of a novice with WordPress. I am building a site using the 2013 theme and am having trouble when displaying posts. In this theme the title displays as a live link but when I click on it for individual posts I get the following error message < ?php the_title(); ?

I have installed the ‘Hide Title’ plugin, which works well for pages, and did wonder whether this might have been implicated in some way. However, having deactivated the problem persists!
