Tip: downgrading/installing the latest version 1

As someone who recommended this plugin more than once, installed it on several websites, and even made small contributions to it, I’m really saddened seeing that @danielregeci decided to push an “upgrade” which removed all original functionality and replaced it with an installer for his commercial plugin. At least to me, the response here gave the impression that, even if Daniel would be focusing on the commercial version going forward, 1.x would remain an available option. I believe that this forced “upgrade” is an asshole move, and WordPress were right to “close” the plugin citing Guideline Violation in response.

However, the closing happened two days after the “upgrade” was released, and by that time, many websites, especially the ones that auto-update, must have had it installed already.

So, if you were “upgraded” this way and want to downgrade back, or if you just want to install version 1 of the plugin on a new website (which still works fine!), there are still options:

1. First, there are at least two public Git repositories where you can download it from. The first one is https://github.com/elcane/CaneTcha. This is a fork of the original repository, which has all commits up to version 1.26.3, plus one extra commit which updates the German translation.
2. Another option is my own repository on Codeberg. It’s a fork of the fork, so, again, original Git history has been preserved. In addition to the aforementioned updated translation, I took liberty to get rid of the upgrade nagbox and tagged and released that as version 1.26.4. Additionally, I’ve also re-added git tags for all releases of the plugin since 1.0.0.
   To install version 1.26.4 from my repo, head over to the download page and download the file called wp-altcha-v1.26.4.zip. Then, in WordPress, go to Plugins → Add Plugin, click the Upload Plugin button at the top, select the zip file you just downloaded, and then follow the instructions on screen. If you have 3.0.0 at the moment, WordPress will warn you about a downgrade, but, once the downgrade is confirmed, it should work just like before.
3. And the third option is cloning the plugin from the WordPress plugin SVN repository. The WordPress page for this plugin provides Trac and SVN links in its Development tab, but you’ll likely have to have svn installed in order to download the source conveniently. Do keep in mind that you want the 1.26.3 tag and not trunk, because the latter contains the installer for the commercial plugin instead of the original open-source ALTCHA plugin.
