Thumbnail Link Issue: Categories vs. Posts

Hello, I am new to Word Press and recently purchased the Black Canvas theme from StudioPress. I am trying to create a photo gallery site to display my images. But, I am having some issues with getting the galleries(changed the name of “categories” or galleries) to display the way I would like them to.

Is there a way to change the way the thumbnails work. Currently when you click on the thumbnails it directs you to the post view. (http://ecsphoto.com/wordpress/?p=111)

What I would like to happen is that when you click on a thumbnail, you are directed to what appears to be the category page. (http://ecsphoto.com/wordpress/?cat=8)

The reason I am interested in this is so that it continues to display the next page>> and what category the image is filed under.

Is this possible??? I have been told that you need to write a custom PHP function to make this happen. So, I guess I am seeing if there is someone out there that has already done something similar. Or found a work-around.
