• Hey,

Have a question. I am new to WordPress.

I did not know where to start – so I have started some sites using Twenty Eleven theme.

Now there I am into them – I am realizing the placement of elements like the header is not really optimal.

For instance – I want to use a slider plugin UNDER the menu. It would be the full width that the “header” is now – but just UNDER the menu – not on top of it.

So I have begun thinking about how to approach projects in the future.

1 – Is it easier to just grab a theme that fits the design layout?

2 – Or am I better off with a trusted theme – like Twenty Eleven – and them manipulating it to fit my needs?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • It really depends on what type of design you want to create, the complexity of that design, how familiar you are with the Twenty Eleven theme, you’re coding expertise etc.

There are so many different themes available, it’s often easier to just find a theme that has the design and layout you want, rather than trying to heavy customize something.

But Twenty Eleven IS customizable isn’t it? Or would moving an element like that – in a child theme – screw things up with theme updates?

Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. First create a child theme for your changes.

    Hey Esmi…

    Already did that. Thanks!

Flipped code around in the header.php file of the child theme. It seems to be working out well.

It’s beautiful when the code pieces are as documented as they are – it makes things relatively easy.
