I am trying (unsuccessfully) to install new themes. In the current rendition of WP, the Theme submenu has disappeared – or it moved somewhere else. As in using the following instructions:

    What is a Theme?

Fundamentally, the WordPress Theme system is a way to "skin" your weblog. Yet, it is more than just a "skin." Skinning your site implies that only the design is changed. WordPress Themes can provide much more control over the look and presentation of the material on your website.

A WordPress Theme is a collection of files that work together to produce a graphical interface with an underlying unifying design for a weblog. These files are called template files. A Theme modifies the way the site is displayed, without modifying the underlying software. Themes may include customized template files, image files (*.jpg, *.gif), style sheets (*.css), custom Pages, as well as any necessary code files (*.php). For an introduction to template files, see Stepping Into Templates.

Let's say you write a lot about cheese and gadgets. Through the use of the WordPress Loop and template files, you can customize your Cheese category posts to look different from your Gadgets category posts. With this powerful control over what different pages and categories look like on your site, you are limited only by your imagination. For information on how to use different Themes for different categories or posts, see The Loop in Action and Category Templates.
    Get New Themes

The WordPress Theme Directory is the official site for WordPress Themes which have been checked and inspected, and are free for downloading. The site features the ability to search by type and style, and offers a demonstration of the page view elements of the Theme.
    Using Themes

WordPress comes with two themes; the default Twenty Thirteen theme and the previous default, Twenty Twelve theme. You can switch between Themes using the admin panel. Themes that you add to the theme directory will appear in the Administration Panels > Design > Themes as additional selections.
    Adding New Themes
    Appearance Panel

There are many Themes available for download that will work with your WordPress installation.

If the Theme that you are installing provides instructions, be sure to read through and follow those instructions for the successful installation of the Theme. It is recommended that Theme developers provide installation instructions for their own Themes, because Themes can provide special optional functionality that may require more steps than the basic installation steps covered here. If your Theme does not work after following any provided instructions, please contact the Theme author for help.
Adding New Themes using the Administration Panels

You can download Themes directly to your blog by using the Add New Themes option in the Appearance sub-menu.

Log in to the WordPress Administration Panels.
Select the Appearance panel, then Themes.
        Select Install Themes.
Use the sub-menu or the Search or Filter options to locate a Theme you would like to use.
Click on the Preview link to preview the Theme or the Install link to upload the Theme to your blog.
Use the Upload link in the top sub-menu to upload a zipped copy of a Theme that you have previously downloaded to your machine.

Can anyone tell me where the admin option went?

    Thanks,
    rowan

Sorry the code messed things up somehow. I was referring to the them install instructions that are
    Login
    Admon panel
    themes
use sub-menu search or filter options

Not sure what you are asking – are you trying to install from the Dashboard of your site?

    See if this helps:

I meant the instructions here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Themes

under Adding New Themes using the Administration Panels

In the directions you recommended, the “Attribute Screen” has disappeared.

    Thank you for responding.

ps – 5 have no “install themes” tab. Themes takes me to the screen for selecting (mamage) the installed theme, bit it also has no install tab.

    What is your site URL?

    (@rowanwolf)

    it is http://uncommonthought.net/wpmb/

It is a multi-blog site. None now have the install option though it did until my last upgrade.

Do you mean it’s a multisite (network of sites)?

Do you have the necessary user permissions to install themes?

Have you tried deactivating all plugins and switching to the default twentythirteen theme?

    Thread Starter rowanwolf

    (@rowanwolf)

    Yes it is a multi-site
    all
There is are 2 users (both me and both with administrator privliges. I had not intended the second user, but it was created when I imported the blogs. I am switching from MT to WP.

No, I had not thought of deactivating the plugins (I haven’t installed any additional. but I can try that.

I tried deactivating and going to the default theme. That didn’t make a diffierence.

I’ll move this thread to the multisite forum – as that’s really a whole different world :).

Not a bug, and not NEW.

No individual site can install themes. No individual site can select a theme that isn’t either network active or active for their site.

Go to wp-admin/network/themes.php to install and manage themes. You can activate per-site if you want, so THEY can select a specific theme.

Thank you! That resolved the issue. Is there a way to make that option available, or is it a manual override only?

No way that I know of, and frankly you don’t want to.

Remember: All sites on a Multisite Network draw from the same code base. So if someone uploads a shitty theme that is vulnerable and gets hacked, you just infected every single site on the network.

Multisite prevents non-SuperAdmins from uploading themes and plugins for your security. I strongly urge you not to override it.
