• Hi,

My logo on my website has disappeared and been replaced by the word Etherna changing the colour scheme to orange and I’m not sure why or how I find out what I need to do.

What I have done so far –
I contacted my web hosting company as I thought it was something they had done – they told me nothing had changed and that it was probably a ‘theme’ but they couldn’t help me further.

I then looked at your forum and it told me to follow some basic steps before commenting on the forum. First or all it said don’t post in this forum, instead follow the link and find your theme and post there, but when I followed the link and searched for ‘Etherna’ it came back with no results – maybe it’s not called Etherna? but unfortunately I don’t have the knowledge to work out what it’s called or if it’s a total red herring.

It also said make sure that all of your plug ins are updated, so I followed all of the instructions for the plug ins that were flagged and I believe I updated them. I’m not sure what to do next to find out why I’m having this problem? Please could anyone advise?

I have been maintaining the content of my website, i.e. adding and updating pages but I didn’t develop the site and the developer who did create it is no longer available, so my knowledge is very limited. I’ve tried reading about themes any my understanding is that they are a template that you plug your pictures and text into and it helps to created the layout and pages – is that correct?

I then made the assumption that I must have had my website develped using a theme called Etherna which is now no longer available so I need to pick another one, but it doesn’t look that straight forward. Do I need to design my whole website again using another theme or can I just do some sort of straight swap – or am I completely wrong.

So sorry my level of understanding is limited, which is why I’ve tried to give a full picture of where I’m up to, could anyone advise please is this a simple thing to fix or is it a complete redesign?

Any help is appreciated, Thank you for your time.

  • That is a commercial theme, and it’s not hosted here in WordPress.org theme repo, that’s why you can’t find its support forum here.

To answer your question, the logo is a default image pulled from theme’s folder. Users just need to go to the theme setting via admin and change the logo. In the admin, look for the header setting or theme setting, most likely under Appearance.

    Hello!

The logo has to do with the theme. Perhaps you made a change that removed it.

Look in the theme’s settings or in Appearance -> Customize. Add or upload the logo again if it’s missing.

Also check the documentation files that came with the theme.

And yes, the theme seems to no longer be supported. It’s also removed from ThemeForest. I recommend looking for another one, because it won’t receive updates, and at some point compatibility issues might appear, and you’ll have to hire a developer.

Thank you, in the logo settings it does appear to be pointing to my uploaded logo image it just isn’t being shown on the top of my website and has been replaced by the words ‘Etherna’ – could this be because the theme is no longer supported it is causing problems?

When you say to look for another theme, where would I look? and will I find one that can just be swapped on a like for like basis or do they all need tailoring completely? I looked in appearance > Themes and it shows the current theme is ‘Etherna’ and the only other alternative Twenty Seventeen (with an option to preview). When I preview the 2017 option which appears to be the only other option it seems everything goes wrong – my website is unrecognisable.

I still believe that the logo issue can be solved via theme settings, and it’s not a theme bug or a compatibility issue, especially if you said that it used to work fine. Perhaps you changed your theme’s header style or something like that, and the theme switched back to the default logo.

Their logo is still uploaded somewhere, it just needs replacing.

You can look for free themes in the WordPress repository, or for Premium themes on ThemeForest. Of course, there are several other places to look for premium themes, but that’s the best place, in my opinion.

When you change themes, yes, everything will be messed up, because every theme has its own style and layout. You’ll have to do some manual work to revamp things.

As for installing and configuring themes, Google is your best friend. You’ll most likely find a tutorial for every question that you might have.

A good place to start is here, though – https://codex.wordpress.org/.

Thank you. The wierd thing is.. I hadn’t changed or updated anything for a few months when it went wrong, that was why I assumed updating the plugins might have solved it i.e. something outside of my control, but they didn’t.

Thank you for the links, really really helpful, particularly the starting point. I’ve been reading through and I’m actually thinking I might just bite the bullet and start again with a new theme as there are some really powerful templates available by the looks of it. So many to choose and as there isn’t a ‘like for like’ swap, it might be time for a change. I had a look at the demos and videos (and ratings) for one called Engage. They actually look easy to use particularly as I was reading the tutorials in your link so I’m quite excited as I think I should have the ability to plug my text and pictures in and make some amendments to the pages/headings.

A very basic question – If I completely revamp my site using the new theme, is it just a case of my website looking a bit funny for a day or two as I customise the bits whilst I create it, or does wordpress allow you to customise the new one offline for a few days but only publish it when it’s complete, which I’m assuming could take a while as I learn and watch tutorials?

With regard to your last question, you can install & activate a new theme immediately and then go about tidying bits up over the next day or so. Alternatively, you can use the Theme Switcha plugin to work on the new theme whilst site visitors still see the old theme.

Thank you, I suppose I’ve got nothing to lose if I install and tidy up over a few days as my old theme isn’t working properly anyway. I just didn’t want to do it if it would disable my website in someway having an incomplete theme, or annoy any possible new customers. We are a very niche business and at this time of year my customers should be too busy to be looking for a supplier so I think I will take the opportunity to refresh my site and content with the new theme. Thank you everyone for the advice and links, i feel like I can make a more informed decision now and I can start working through the recommended tutorials and advice. Much appreciated.
