• I have a self-hosted website, and I downloaded the zip file for the theme Panel from here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/panel/

I installed the theme and activated it. At first I thought it installed just fine, because my website now looks different, but then I realized that some things are not working.

In the admin panel there’s supposed to be an extra menu item on the LHS called “Comics”, but it’s not there. I should be able to drag and drop images into the admin panel to start new Comic posts, but that doesn’t work. I’m supposed to get a new action under “All Posts” in the action menu, but I don’t.

Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks for any help!

    Henning

  • I’m sorry but as you are using a theme that is not available via http://wordpress.org/themes/, you need to seek support from the theme’s developers – paid or otherwise. We only support themes downloaded from wordpress.org here.

Oh, okay. So I guess I’ll have to contact Automattic.

    Sorry about that.

I tried contacting them, but they’re sending me back here because my site isn’t hosted at wordpress.com.

    This is frustrating…

If your theme’s vendors are not providing support for their products then consider switching to a theme we support http://wordpress.org/themes/ .

henningh: Panel’s not actually meant for full public consumption quite yet — there’s a Custom Post Type definition in Jetpack that should be usable early next week, that’s necessary for a lot of the features to work.

Hello, I am currently also using the panel theme on my wordpress.com blog that I am looking to move to .org. Is there any update if the panel theme is ready for use for .org already or when it might be ready? Thanks!

I contacted the makers of the theme, and they acknowledge that the theme is not ready to be used like that. They said they are working on a fix, and that it was coming soon, but that was two weeks ago and there’s been nothing.

henningh: Thank you for letting me know. πŸ™‚

I am not sure what else can be done in this case then. I’m not too sure who made the theme, but I have sent an email to this kind lady Caroline Moore who was answering questions in the comments, and who said much the same thing as you and to stay tuned. Hope it comes out soon, since I don’t really want to change the theme again after just changed it in the last month.

    Have a good day.

Hi there! Sorry for all the confusion about where to get support for Panel, which is an Automattic theme. The good news is that Panel is now available for download right in the WordPress.org repository:

    http://wordpress.org/themes/panel

…and has its very own support forum, which should make things a bit simpler. πŸ™‚

    http://wordpress.org/support/theme/panel

henningh – I see that you’ve been communicating with Automattic Happiness Engineer Grace on this, so I’ll let her continue helping you there.

weliveinaflat – if you have any other questions about Panel that I might be able to help with, feel free to post them in the Panel forum I linked above.

Thanks for your patience, and again, sorry for the confusion.

FWIW (and to follow-up), I setup the Panel theme together with the Jetpack plugin just now and I could see options for all of the things henningh mentioned: Comics in the left menu, drag and drop for images, bulk editing to convert posts to Comics. I tested the drag and drop and it worked. I could see the other options, but haven’t tested them. Maybe try them out with Jetpack installed?

There’s no support or FAQ on the panel theme.

How do we get an archive of comics listed on a page?

The theme is buggy and undocumented. It doesn’t even mention that jetpack is required, I figured that out by chance.

Okay, I got the latest version of the theme working somewhat. I can add a new post and it’ll show up on the website. There’s a problem that the Automattic people are aware of and are working on: when you post a new comic, it gives you error messages, even though it seems to have worked.

So I’m pretty happy. It’s a nice looking theme, it’s mostly working (and they’re working on a fix), and it’s free.

felknar: if you figure out the archive stuff, can you post the answer here?

    You got it.

I’m still having trouble with permalinks breaking Panel but you can view your comic archive by going to http://www.yourcomic.com/?post_type=jetpack-comic

    It’s a start at least.

Ah, I found it too after testing some more β€” I didn’t test far enough before! Glad to hear you’re in contact with someone who’s working on it.

http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/panel/ is the best documentation for now. I’ve made a note to check into adding info. about the Jetpack dependency.

How do we get an archive of comics listed on a page?

That’s covered in http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/panel/ where it says:

You can add a Comics archive link to your menu using a Custom Link:

    http://yoursitename.wordpress.com/comic/

It’s not working for me on my test site right now, but I’ll make sure it gets reported as a bug.
