• I am wondering the reasons behind “comment spam.”

Sometimes I get Spam or comments that don’t look malicious, but seem very random (also repetitive). For example: “Your blog helped me do my college essay. Thanks” or something very generic.

What is the spammer trying to do here. Are they hoping that you don’t have your settings set so that they can post freely once their first post if authorized.

Or does it have something to do with link backs? Is it harmless?

    Thanks

    Bingo! 🙂

    Is it harmless?

It doesn’t do any harm to your site from a technical perspective but a stack of completely unrelated generic comments at the end of a post looks pretty awful.

Did a quick on link backs and read info on Wiki.

Are link backs somethjing you suggest I myself should be doing to help improve my SEO? Seems “gimmicky” to post useless comments everywhere.

I’ve actually had a comments actually saying that they wanted me to help them with their trackbacks. Wasn’t suire what they were talking about.

Absolutely not! It’s one very good way to get yourself quickly blacklisted by Akismet.

If you’re trying to improve your link backs, seek out sites that complement your own but don’t directly compete with you. See if you can arrange article swaps with other blog owners in return for a link back. Add comments to other blogs only where you have something to say that is pertinent to the site in question and your site.

Google is looking for quality back links – not just any old rubbish.

Thanks. I will do more research on the subject.

I do like the idea of article swapping. Looks like it can be very beneficial to everyone involved.
