I have the same problem. http://mysite.url/sitemap.xml loads as the home page and Webmaster tools gives the error “Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.”
I’ve reset the permalinks and dumped all of the W3TC caches.
Sitemap: http://mysite.url/sitemap.xml is written into the robot.txt
http://mysite.url/?feed=sitemap does produce a feed recognised by webmaster tools though

Webmaster tools just returned the same error for
http://mysite.url/?feed=sitemap
well 4 errors:
/sitemap-home.xml
/sitemap-posttype-page.xml
/sitemap-posttype-post.xml
/sitemap-taxonomy-category.xml

Is there redirection occurring? Can you share your true URL?
@canarystudio – this is happening because your complete site (including all feeds) is password protected. You might see the sitemap but Google bot simply sees a login form, not a sitemap.
@all – please verify your sitemaps when logged out or in an Incognito browser window.
