Thanks for checking the logs. The error “Could not instantiate mail function” means your server’s built-in PHP mail function failed to send the email. The plugin passes the email to WordPress’s standard mail function, and the failure happens at the server level after that.
The most reliable fix is to send emails through SMTP instead:
- Install an SMTP plugin, for example SmartSMTP.
- Enter the SMTP details (host, port, username, password) from your hosting provider or email service.
- Go back to Site Assistant and click Send Test Email again.
Alternatively, you can ask your hosting provider to check why PHP mail isn’t working on your server.

Thanks for your reply. I just retested it without changing anything and it worked. Not sure why. (?)
In addition:
I did a test signup. Was able to immediate access the site without email confirmation – even though I had toggle activated for email confirmation (shouldn’t have been able to gain immediate site access).
Also, never received any email confirmation. The only email I received was a welcome email. Things look very iffy so far.
I also checked password reset feature to see if that would even work. It failed. Didn’t receive anything. (and yes, had the green toggle on for that too)
