• Hi All,

We’re getting a few errors (404 broken links) in Google Search Console that have the URL “tag/xxx” in them. For example, “tag/pasta-sauce” or “tag/vinaigrette”. I’m assuming these are either tags that existed at one point, and were deleted, or they were somehow automatically generated by WordPress.

We DON’T want Google indexing tag pages. We’ve put “noindex” on our current tag page settings, but can’t do anything about tags we don’t know about or remember.

My question is how can I prevent Google from indexing ALL tag pages (or “category” pages for that matter) and throwing these errors up?

We’re on WP 4.9.8 and we have Yoast plugin version 7.9.1 installed.

    Thanks in advance.

In Yoast, have it not generate sitemaps for the tags.

Thanks for responding. Hmmm… checked the Yoast settings (SEO –> Search Appearance –> Taxonomies –> Tags) and “Show Tags in search results?” is set to “No”. I switched it to “yes” then back to “no” to reset it and then saved it.

The Search Console entries for the last week or so no longer have any tag errors, so we’ll have to keep an eye on it and see what happens.
