Sync subscriber lists to custom fields

We selected Sendpress for its awesome ability to sync subscriber lists to users, grouped by user roles.
However, as users can only be assigned to one role and many of our subscribers will belong to several groups (so will be on several lists) this isn’t going to quite work for us.
As a solution we are considering using a custom post type for subscribers contact details (instead of user accounts), with custom fields containing all the info, including the email address. That way we can assign a subscriber to multiple categories.
My questions is – is there any hook, filter or shortcode that will allow us to sync subscriber lists with the email addresses held in a custom field for this custom post type?
