When I make a translation, then it is shown on the site, this means that the .po file has been updated.
So I’m wondering what’s the use of pressing the Sync button.

The purpose of sync is to merge the available source strings into existing translations. Think of it as a pull, rather than a push. (new strings added, old ones removed, etc..). It is documented here: https://localise.biz/wordpress/plugin/manual/sync

Well, I thought I have to click it every now and then.
When new plugin translations show up I click Sync my custom .po.
