Switching views returns blank result

I’m on WP 3.5.1 and AIO 1.9.3-standard. and have tested to confirm this isn’t an issue with my theme or any plugins. See http://www.utexas.edu/ssw/new/about-us/calendar/ – when you switch between the ‘views’, you see the whirling circle, then nothing. BUT if you then hit ‘refresh’ in your browser (to directly load a view, such as http://www.utexas.edu/ssw/new/about-us/calendar/action:month/ ) the correct view appears.
The next month / previous month functionality and switch-categories is broken the same way.
It seems to be an issue with AJAX? This site is on a server running PHP_SAFE_MODE (beyond my control) but that’s the only thing I can think would affect this – unless anyone else has an idea? thank you!!
