Switcher for author pages with no posts

On author pages who have no posts in another language, the switcher directs to the homepage instead of the author page in the other language.

In my case, author pages are being used as profile pages in all languages, even when the author doesn’t have posts in those languages. I’m looking for a way to enable the switcher to switch to the other language, just like when the author does have published posts.

This thread here offers a solution editing the plugin files, which still works 2 years later, but of course editing the plugin is not a real option.

Any advice to get this set up via functions.php or otherwise? TIA
