Last night I’ve got a notification from my shared hosting provider about extreme high CPU utilization – in peek times it reached up to 2,500% of my allowed power! The only information associated with that was that the file that consumes this enormous power is my WP index.php. I’ve asked the provider for more info but got none apart from I already known…

I have the lastest available WP and all plugins used installed and at least for 4-5 days before it happened no WP item was modified / upgraded, so definitely no new / modified script etc. could start running suddenly. I’ve reviewed the access logs, security logs and error logs and found nothing unusual. The traffic hasn’t changed dramatically.

I even took down the site for a couple of hours – surprisingly enough for most time CPU load was almost zero, but there were two peek hours with 600% load! Now the site is back online and I’m still reaching 300-500% of the allowed consumption.

I’ve just installed W3 Total Cache hoping it would reduce CPU usage but need to wait until some results are available.

Is there any way to investigate the root cause of the issue? The site address is http://www.fraudiq.eu.

  • hi,
You need to try deactivate and reactivate all plugin one by one.
and also check for broken links on site like images not found.

    thanks

    Wow, that’s gonna take a looong while… 🙁

However, if no changes were made to the site prior to the issue, do you think it can be caused by some malfunctioning plugin indeed?

Possibly but, ultimately, there is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.

I’m working as advised and suffering, as the CPU chart is presented by hour, so I need to wait that long to see if disabling any plugin has made a difference… 🙁

Isn’t there any plugin / script / site etc. to validate the site contents towards potential CPU impact? I’ve already tried P3 but it told me everything seemed OK…

It looks I have a winner – it seems to be WP Social Pro plugin, formerly called IK Facebook / IK Social.

I’ve disabled it as the last one last night and re-enabled this morning, and:
    CPU Load

I’m surprised though that the CPU was still heavily loaded in the consecutive hour, as I disabled the plugin after approx 40 minutes…

Anyone had similar CPU problems with this plugin?
