Subscribers name in email

Hi

Im new to this newsletter, when you send the newsletter to subscribers and it says dear [name]…….

Does this mean the subscribers name will be automatically inserted?

If they only singed up with their email, will their email address be used as their name? can you change this so they enter their name on subscription?
