Subscribe to blog plugin?
-
Hi,
Is there a plugin so people can subscribe to the blog and be notified by email when there is a new post? This is automatically installed on WordPress.org, but I haven’t found something similar for a WordPress.org site yet?
Thank You, David

I recommend Feedburner’s subscribe-by-email feature. It’ll also provide you with a better RSS feed.
Then just install the Feedsmith plug-in to autmatically redirect the default WordPress RSS feed to your new one, and add the email signup link to your theme.
Thanks Zooini,
I do know about feedburner. I would rather not have another account for this. Is there anything else available that would work the way the blog subscription in wordpress.com functions. Its so straightforward and easy- I don’t quite understand why I don’t see this as a plug-in for wp.org..
Thanks, David
Perhaps something like RSS to Email? Caveat: I’ve never used it myself and not sure if it works with the latest version of WP.
BTW – if you already have a Gmail or Google account there’s no need to open a separate Feedburner account since they’re owned by Google, in case that’s a factor – no new password/username to create. π
Thanks for the tips Zoonini.
All I want is a simple email-subscription like there is on WordPress.com..? I was able to import the list we have and just want it administered this way, without having two services going out.
I don’t understand why the subscription list is in WordPress without something available for readers to just add emails to like WordPress.com?
The RSS to Email is in Beta and requires users to sign up for an account. Also hasn’t been updated in ages.
Feedburner – I don’t even see an email subscription widget – it just takes users to their RSS version. More hassle there.. I thought the RSS heyday was over anyhow..
Any ideas? There has to be a way to just subscribe by email to the blog like you can in WordPress.com…
Hi there, here are some instructions on adding a Feedburner “subscribe by email” box to your site: http://icfun.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-add-feedburner-email.html

Perhaps this is a feature WordPress will add to the self-hosted version in the future, like they did with the WordPress site stats.
Thanks for the link Zoonini.
I still don’t understand why there is a place to add subscribers by email directly in WordPress but no plug-in or widget to have them sign-up. How are you supposed to administer this?
Isn’t here a simple widget available to at least collect their email to add to the list manually?
Honestly, as far as I’ve read- using RSS readers and feedburner is past its prime.
Thanks for your advice- I really do appreciate it.

There’s no option to subscribe via email to RSS feeds in WordPress core. Without something like Feedburner, people subscribe to your RSS feed by simply reading it using their preferred RSS reader or aggregator.
What am I missing here?
Why is there a subscribers panel in the admin and no tool for them to sign up directly on the site?
Thanks, David
Why is there a subscribers panel in the admin
Can you provide a screenshot of where you’re seeing this and the URL of your site?
Sure. Its under ‘Tools’ – “Subscribers”
Here’s a screenshot
Actually I’m testing out the Subscribe2 plugin, which has a widget- it does this pretty well, not getting it to send html updates yet tho.
Thanks, David

That is not a built-in feature of WordPress.org – I’ve never seen that before. Perhaps that’s the Subscribe2 plug-in interface? If so, you’d need to follow their instructions in order to add a signup box to your site.
