Subpages to parent navigation bar

How do you get subpages to show up on the parent navigation bar of the parent page? I have gotten them to show up in a drop down under the parent but that is not what I want. Just to make the question more clear when you click on a parent page I want the subpages to show on the navigation bar of that page. I am using twenty eleven theme if it matters. Thanks for any help.
