You have to setup your DNS/wildcard sub-domains first…usually in cpanel. If you do it right all subdomains will go to WP. Then you need to add the site in WP.
I had my host do it for me.. and I still have the 404 error..
they are now telling me that the MU install is not configured correctly.. I dont have any errors telling me so.
How would I check to see if the wildcare subdomain was actually done?
wouldn’t I see the “*” in as a subdomain?
Ok.. so I have been able to confirm that the wildcard subdomain has been created.. what could actually be wrong with the set up.. even though I see no error messages on the dashboard.
I could help more if you shared your domain names. If not that is ok. First I would test one of these urls – http://domain.com/readme.html or http://domain.com/wp-login.php
Next try it on a sub-domain – http://sub1.domain.com/readme.html If that works your sub-domains are configured correctly. If you used http://sub1.domain.com/wp-login.php it should redirect you back to the main site – http://domain.com/wp-login.php
You shouldnt go further till the above scenarios work.
Hi Jkhongusc,
I was able to get it to work. I found were the “*” was and deleted it and entered it all over again..
somehow that cleared the issue.
thanks so much for following up on this.
