subdomain and wp .htaccess question

    I am hosting at midphase, using a subdomain for now (development), so the WP installed into dev.example.com…

    WP is reporting non-writable files, yet any view of the .htaccess file I created and FTP’d or of the vars.php file via midphase cpanel’s file manager shows permissions set to 666

    1) is there some issue using a subdomain?
    2) is there some issue using midphase that anyone is familiar with?

    I copied the htaccess code provided by wp on setting up permalinks, but wp couldn’t generate the htaccess file, so I made one and uploaded it. When accessing via the manage/files, wp says this file is not writable.

    Any help appreciated! This is the first time I’ve used wp in a subdomain

    You don’t need that. At least I never had to do that…

    I have installed WP on subdomains many times. It should work.
    Though I have cPanel I manage my files and permissions via FTP. It always works.

    I have never heard about your host…

    turns out that the file manager at midphase cpanel is broken. The permissions were not correct. Once set, everything was good to go.

    It seems to me, though, that midphase should simply remove the set permissions link from their file manager, if it doesn’t work. I had to ask 3 times to get them to say exactly that – the file manager is broken. They weaseled around as much as possible rather than admit it.

    Thanks, though! midphase is actually listed on the wp hosts page…they are the same as AN Hosting. Other than this file manager thing, they’ve been pretty good. Reasonable, nice features, functions and prices. Plus a one-click install of many third party apps, including WP.
