Stuck on: Are you human?

since the update to WordPress 6.4.9 I haven’t been able to access our website. I’m getting lots more emails to verify, or mark as spam, posts on one of our news pages but when I try to log in to manage this I get ‘are you human?’ message and the tick box, after a few attempts there are pictures to select and I’ve made several attempts over the last few weeks to log in to no avail. We have no commerce plug ins on the website (it is for a community band and we use it to post news about the band and update our concert dates. I last logged into the site around March 2026 to mark some comments as spam. The spam started again after the update in early August and I’m receiving 10-20 emails a day highlighting that these need assessing. Can anyone help me log into the site – I didn’t build it and don’t have much knowledge.

The “Are you human” prompt is coming from Cloudflare. Do you have any plugins related to that? Your site is using a Cloudflare firewall, so I recommend checking your Cloudflare settings.

I didn’t set the website up so I don’t know about a cloudflare firewall or how to check the settings – and I can’t log into the website to check what plug ins there are as I can’t get past this screen. The person that set the original site up is no longer contactable.

@Bhavika Khatri thanks for your advice but adding ?test123 to the address still gives me the ‘are you human?’ page and doesn’t take me to the site.

If you need someone to fix this for you, we suggesting hiring someone from jobs.wordpress.net. First, though, you might contact Cloudflare support.

Hi @creswellband,

The login screen appears for me when I check the *Are you human* checkbox. So, are you still having login issues even after clicking the *Are you human* checkbox? This checkbox should be added by a security plugin or a service, not by WordPress itself.

The latest version of WordPress is 7.1, so you are using a very old version now. Does it happen in other browsers or when you log in from a different device?

Have you contacted the hosting service or whoever manages the website to temporarily disable the security service/plugin or whitelist your IP so you can regain access?

The large number of comment-spam notifications is a separate issue worth investigating. It depends on which plugin you are using to handle it.
