Stuck at “Checking Files…”

I installed Hummingbird to check it out. Performed the Performance Test. When I run the Optimization routines, where it is “Hummingbird is running a file check to see what files can be optimized”, it usually hangs somewhere between 44% and 67% and never progresses beyond that. How to diagnose this issue?
