Step by step

Is there a place that has just step by step instructions for setting up the nextgen gallery?
I have it installed, but can’t seem to get going on my own. Created the gallery with 3 test images and page link to my test page, but nothing is showing up on the test page when I preview it or publish it. Nothing is showing on the page. Just the WP theme (striking) as is with no gallery or thumbnails. All of the rest of the site works fine.
I need this gallery for about 40 pix.

**Update, I managed to create a page and find [nggallery id=1], then copied that into the page I wanted it in and it works. But I thought Linking it to a page would work? Does that not work or do you have to create a new page everytime you want a gallery? And this code “[nggallery id=1]” Where was that generated from?
Need instructions….I’m sure it’s user error and I’m just not seeing them. The gallery looked good though.
