Static Front Page Pro’s & Cons

I’m a newbie so take it easy on me.

What are the pro’s and cons with regards to search engines (google etc..) and sites like technorati if I set my blog to have a static homepage (using the feature available in WP 2.1)?

What are the pro’s and cons in general of having a static front page with regards to blogs?
