I am just starting out in WordPress Development though I have been using WordPress for making websites since the last 3 years.

I am very familiar with HTML, CSS and JS hence I started learning PHP and MySQL too so that I can develop my own themes too. I also started reading the Developer Handbook for Themes – https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/

But it is just too much. I don’t know whether I am doing it right.

Should I continue this way or should I start looking at the codes in the templates file and start playing around with it. (making child themes).
I just need some advice on how you guys started developing for WordPress and maybe provide a roadmap or path (I know there is no such thing as a specific roadmap), but I’d appreciate your 2 cents.

    Thanks 🙂

Probably best to look at themes that are already built and start hacking them. That should help get you through a steep learning curve.

Well okay. I will try to modify the twenty seventeen theme and play around with the code. Thanks @anevins 🙂

    Any other suggestions are appreciated.

When you feel ready, you could start helping out in the forums. You can learn from people responding to threads and you can also learn by directly helping someone out. I’m talking from personal experience 😉

    I really appreciate the advice.
I do want to contribute to the WordPress Community given the powerful set of features we get and that too for free (and open source of course).
