Staging in subdirectory or subdomain

    Dear René,

    I just found your plugin and think it would help me a lot with maintaining my own website (small business).

    My question before installing/deciding on free/pro version:
    what are the differences of staging in a subDIRECTORY vs a SubDOMAIN? What would be implications going down one road vs the other? In which circumstances would a subdirectory be better, in which a subdomain?

    thanks for your question.

    Normally, a staging website in a subfolder works as intended and exactly as the production website on the root domain.

    In some rare situations, it might be possible that your site struggles with the subfolder approach. If this happens – in most of all occurrences – it’s related to the WordPress permalink structure which differs on the staging site slightly if the site has been created in a subfolder,

    This can happen if you use WPML or polylang with the language code /en/de in the URL and/or using custom rewrite rules in your .htaccess which would need some manual adaptations for the modified URL structure.

    For instance, have a look at
    example.come/staging-site/page
    compared to
    example.com/page

    So something like dev.example.com would have the same permalink structure as the production site which may be a little more robust in terms of future modifications.

    Anyways, if the copy of your site works as intended and does not behave odd in some way feel free to stick with the subfolder approach.

    If you like to use the shorter and “cooler” subdomain go that route;-)
