• Usually on my blogs I do not enable user registrations. I just enabled buddypress on one of my sites and turned on “anyone can register.”

Literally within hours I began getting registrations I highly suspect are nothing more than spammers of some sort because they register and then do not do any other kind of activity.

What are some “best practices” for limiting these spammer registrations? I have read that captcha plugins aren’t that effective – can anyone confirm?

    What does work?

  • I, too, do not allow registrations for any of my sites except for the one that I’m using BuddyPress.

From my standpoint, captchas are effective against spammers, though they may deter some folks from joining. That being said, would they really be valuable participating members if they won’t even take five additional seconds to register?

IMO, captchas are OK for registrations but not a good idea for comments.
