I’m starting an adult blog and while I realize that’s not everyone’s forte it is a blog and I think it would be nice if other adult bloggers and visitors could comment on articles just like any other blog.

However due to the nature of it spam is most likely going to be a problem I contacted a few other adult bloggers and they were kind enough to reply, on the subject of spam they all said flat out they had to completely disable comments and trackbacks.

I’m hoping it doesn’t come to this so im going to give it a try with them enabled, here is what I have done so far.
Set up domain I have a virtual shared server set up database installed wordpress 2.1 installed a new theme started reading up on wordpress as I’ve never used it before and saw that many were having a problem with spam read the support forums about comment and trackback spam.

I have to say im surprised that with so many wordpress users having a spam problem that there isn’t a huge sticky post detailing exactly what plug ins and how to install them if they cant be included in the wordpress distro itself for license reasons.
I saw the articles on worpress about comment spam and plug ins
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Combating_Comment_Spam
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Spam_Tools
but it seems to spread out when In My Opinion it should be merged into one killer anti spam page.

Here are the anti spam steps I’ve taken so far enabled akismet installed and enabled sk2 apparently sk2 didn’t like my new theme as it threw errors so I switched to default theme and refreshed and it seems to be happy now
    installed and enabled bad-behavior.

Right now that is where im at I haven’t made a post yet as id like to spam harden my system as much as possible now rather than later when I have a good site going and something to lose if I mess up or a plug in is outdated and crashes something. ( is that possible? I don’t even know, seems possible )

    So
    akismet http://akismet.com/
    sk2 http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/
    bad-behavior http://www.bad-behavior.ioerror.us/
All running at once I have seen post’s mentioning that akismet can be run as a plug in to sk2 I believe it was but they didn’t go into much detail, should I be running akismet as a plug in to sk2?

I haven’t changed any of the settings in wordpress at the moment they are at the default settings.

Anything that you would recommend to help spam harden my blog would be greatly appreciated

PS sorry about the book there I love to write.

  • Use all three and let your comment spam worries be gone. There is nothing to do but activate them and then let them do their work.

With the advent of human comment spammers, though, you do have to keep an eye on things to keep your site clean of comment spam.

Also, consider allowing only registered users to comment. This may help you get around any laws regarding underage commenters and participants (make them click YES to acknowledging their age) and might help with some comment spam.

Great thanks for your reply I figured it would be best to double check before I start posting since im brand new to wordpress.

Bad Behavior will catch the bulk of the spam and then Akismet gets the rest. Installed BB a few weeks ago and went from 30-50 spam messages a day to 1 or 2.
