• My site was recently hacked and the infestation has been cleared out.

At the same time, I began receiving loads more spam than usual.

My host company refuse to take any action as they tell me that spam is part and parcel of having a website.

I don’t accept this. There is no reason not to be doing everything possible to prevent the spam getting to the server in the first place.

In wordpress, I copy every single IP address and put it in the discussion comment blacklist section. But I’m still seeing some of those IP addresses getting through. Why ?

And of course, it does nothing to stop new ones getting through.

I use Defensio as a plugin, and they refuse to do anything more as,to be fair, their plugin captures 98% of the spam. But I have to check all of the hundreds of spam messages as some valid comments do get through still. Plus I have to copy all the IP addresses.

All of this is taking time.

Does anyone know if this spam increase is likely to be linked to the hack attack or not ?

Do others just put up with all this spam ?

I don’t accept that if you have a popular site then you have to be inundated with vile spam – some of it is really unpleasant. But I do not know what else to do. Everyone has their favourite plugins – and from experience I’d say they all seem to work to a point.

What else can be done ?

    Thank you.

  • You can integrate a captcha in contact form 7. Here’s a link explaining how to do so:

It doesn’t appear clear at all whether spam is illeagal or not

It depends where you are. It’s legal here in the US.

No-one here seems to know how to add a recapatcha to contact form 7, which would also help.

We DO know, but you probably can’t use it. Defensio won’t let you. Try Tim’s link, but if it doesn’t work, that’s why.

Ipstenu – I want to get one thing really clear.

the Capatcha works absolutely fine on my site with Defensio.

Appreciate you have an issue with Defensio but your complaining about it has been unhelpful to me and indeed, it’s taken me longer to decide what to do than it should have in light of your comments.

So for anyone else who is asking this question – it works fine for me.

Add on the subject of spam – Ipstenu you did say earlier in this post :

What’s being done? Nothing. Because no one who’s made this illegal is enforcing it (California, I’m looking at you).

    And then you said :

It depends where you are. It’s legal here in the US.

Well, California is part of the US last time I looked !

It’s really best not to make sweeping statements unless you are certain of your facts. It’s just not helpful.

Hmm. Then you probably can use other spam trapping tools, with Defensio, and they’re incorrect in their claims. Which means I would certainly try the other tools as well if you’re getting hammered with spam.

Again, TRY Tim’s link. Here it is again: http://contactform7.com/blog/2009/11/25/captcha/

And while I’m not a lawyer, California has not yet successfully outlawed spam (has it stopped? No? There you go). Technically the whole US has a federal law about it, which supercedes the California law, and actually I recall in 2004(?) that your state tossed their law because of the federal law.

HOWEVER. BOTH of those laws have to do with email (and computer crime). And that’s not what I was talking about. See, it’s illegal to MAKE spam. If you get spam, the spam maker is breaking the law, not you, so basically it’s a stupid hair split about if it’s illegal to receive spam (you’re not a fence, after all). Which was what I meant. It’s illegal to cold-call a cell phone, especially if you’re on do-not-call in the US, but the enforcement of such laws is laughable. Basically, we have laws that no one pays attention to, which is as good as no law at all.

It’s like the EU’s cookie law. I can see where the idea is meant, but the implementation is idiotic. Ahhh, our government at work.
