I’m getting the same issue. It happens regardless of what the URLs are.
I’ve tried loads of combinations, including:
Source: /temporary
Target: /permanent
Source: /temporary
Target: http://wordpress.com
Source: http://japh.com.au/temporary
Target: http://wordpress.com
All fail with the error posted by the OP.
btw, it didn’t used to fail. I’m wondering if it’s a compatibility issue with the current WP version.

I am having a similar problem, I keep getting a message saying too many redirects occurred when I try to visit my new site, funkydaddy.net?
Source, funkydaddy.wordpress.com
Target, funkydaddy.net
Have removed redirect until i hopefully get resolved soon,
Any advice greatly appreciated,
