I used this plugin to set up a number of Quick redirects prior to changing my DNS to point my domain name to the new wordpress site. Changed the DNS settings two days ago. Things have been behaving very oddly ever since. Very quickly, it seemed, my new site was showing at the domain name. But every time I would try to access the WordPress dashboard, something weird would happen – I’d get just so far, then get a 404 error message. My web host thought the DNS change just hadn’t propogated fully yet, but what’s strange is that sometimes after the 404 error I’d check the actual site (front end) and it would have reverted back to the old site. That’s not supposed to happen, is it? Once the DNS has been re-pointed, it’s repointed, right?

Finally I pinned it down to whenever I’d try to access the Quick Redirect plugin menu and save a new redirect, that’s when the 404 error would appear, and then when I’d go back and try to access another area of the dashboard I’d just visited, I’d get the 404 error again, eventually I wouldn’t be able to do anything in the dashboard at all, and then I’d check and would see that the old site was coming up in the browser instead of the new site.

This morning I disabled, then uninstalled the plug-in, and then I couldn’t access the dashboard at all. I finally got in by trying the temporary url the host gave me for setting up the site, but I keep getting the 404 errors. I don’t even know how to begin troubleshooting this problem! Can someone help me, please?

  • TeqToo,
Without know what redirect you have set up, I cannot tell you for sure that it is the plugin or the DNS.

What it sounds like is one of two possible things:
    1. You set up redirects for admin pages (which you should really never need to do).
    2. Your site is cached. This could be caching via a plugin or your theme, or it could be your browser is also using the cached pages of the site (especially if you had caching turned on prior).

The plugin deactivation would not lock you out of the admin – unless you have a admin redirect and it is cached (meaning the page data or redirect is still being served to the browser by either the server or the browser itself – and not the newly created page data). The plugin does not add any permalinks or htaccess redirects, so turning it off would have no bearing on the site without caching.

I strongly suggest you clear your browser cache first (usually in the browser security settings somewhere – google it if you are not sure how for your browser).

THEN, see if you can get into the admin area and if you have a cache plugin installed, clear the cache files and turn it off for the time being. There are many different caching possibilities to look for. Some plugins have caching with them (WordFence, JetPack, etc) and some have limited settings or no settings (WP Cache, WP Super Cache and many others), and some themes come with caching (that many users are not even aware of). So look hard for anything that caches the page data and clear it or turn it off.

If that does not work, then your DNS settings are probably not correct – almost all of the support issues that come in like this are usually not the plugin it is caching or something else.

Please also update this post if you are able to get the issue resolved, so others know how you did it if they have similar issues in the future.

    Warmest regards,
    Don

    Don, thanks for the reply.

I have cleared my browser’s cache about a dozen times, it seems to make no difference.

I didn’t set up any redirects for the admin pages, just for front pages that existed in the old (Windows server, non-Wordpress) site that are not part of the new site.

I don’t have any of the cache plugins you mentioned. I don’t know how to check and see if my theme (a child of Twenty Eleven) has caching or not.

My web host feels that it’s just a matter of needing more time. Interestingly, I must be going senile, because I just did a Google search on this issue and came up with this thread which (wait for it….) I STARTED less than a year ago when I had the same issue with another website I’d built! Oh my goodness, I DO hate Hughesnet!

Yes, I would have to agree that maybe it is just the DNS that needs to propagate fully then.

I have seen on several occasions, hosting companies taking a long time to update the settings. Some of the bigger ones (like GoDaddy, 1&1, for example) that are very quick. I have never used Hughesnet, but I personally had a similar experience on a BlueHost site we worked on several years ago.

Hopefully it corrects itself for you soon!

    Warmest regards,
    Don

Oh, Hughesnet isn’t my web host, it’s my Internet Service Provider. The webhost seems to feel that because Satellite providers are known for excessive caching in order to minimize resource use that the problem is with my own access to the new site, not a general DNS propogation problem. Just my luck!
